ISO50001 was introduced in 2011 and is the international standard aimed at helping companies develop and implement an energy policy and improve its energy performance.  The standard is designed to help develop a policy for more efficient use of energy, fix targets and objectives to meet the policy.  Using the standard, consumers are encouraged to better understand and make decisions concerning their energy use and consumption.  At the core of the standard is the concept of Plan, Do, Check and Act where the company can use the standard to conduct the energy review and establish the baseline, energy          performance indicators (EnPIs), objectives, targets and action plans necessary to deliver results in accordance with opportunities to improve energy performance and the organization’s energy policy.  After the implementation of the energy management action plans, companies need to monitor and measure their processes and the key characteristics of their operations to determine energy performance against the energy policy and objectives and report the results within the EnMS (Energy Management System).
